What Dreamcatcher is about
Four lifelong friends, Jonesy, Pete, Beaver and Henry, head out each year to a hunting lodge called Hole-in-the-Wall, near the fictional town of Derry, Maine. Their bond goes back to their early teens, when they stood up to some cruel bullies on behalf of Duddits, an older boy with Down syndrome. Knowing him left them with unusual gifts, including telepathy and shared dreaming.
This year's trip turns strange when the friends find themselves caught between an alien invasion and Abraham Kurtz, a deranged retired Air Force colonel. A reddish fungus and a presence called Mr. Gray bring the threat close to home, in the body and the mind. Stephen King wrote it in longhand while recovering from a 1999 car crash, and it mixes body horror and suspense. It will appeal to readers who like King's small-town friendships set against something much larger and nastier.
