What Odd Thomas is about
Odd Thomas is a twenty-year-old short-order cook in the California desert town of Pico Mundo, and he can see and speak with the dead. He also sees bodachs, shadowy creatures that gather only when death and disaster are near. When a suspicious man he nicknames Fungus Man arrives trailed by a crowd of them, Odd knows something terrible is coming.
Over the course of two days he races to avert a cataclysm, helped by his soulmate, Bronwen 'Stormy' Llewellyn, and sometimes accompanied by the ghost of Elvis Presley. Dean Koontz's 2003 thriller became a New York Times Best Seller and was well received by critics. It has a quirky, warmhearted voice, a small-town setting and real suspense, and it explores death, responsibility and the struggle between good and evil. It was followed by sequels and a 2013 film adaptation.
