What Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, #1) is about
Sookie Stackhouse is a telepathic waitress in the fictional Louisiana town of Bon Temps, near Shreveport, in the early 2000s. She tells the story herself, working at Merlotte's diner for its owner, Sam Merlotte, and living with the constant noise of other people's thoughts. Then Bill Compton walks in. He is a vampire, and she falls for him.
In this world, vampires and other supernatural creatures are real. Synthetic blood called Tru Blood has allowed vampires to reveal themselves to humans, though not everyone welcomes them. Vampire blood has its own pull, speeding healing, boosting strength and libido, and making the drinker better-looking. The first book in the Southern Vampire Mysteries, it later became the first season of True Blood. Sassy, steamy, and steeped in Southern gothic atmosphere, it suits readers who like romance, mystery, and small-town life with a supernatural twist.
