What Men at Arms is about
Captain Vimes of Ankh-Morpork's City Watch has a wedding to prepare for and a force that is about to change. Vimes must take on more varied recruits, so a dwarf named Cuddy, a troll named Detritus and a werewolf named Angua join the ranks, and the first two start out with a bitter dislike of each other. Soon the Watch is pulled toward a string of Guild murders, and Lord Vetinari makes sure Vimes investigates by forbidding him to.
Behind it all is an aggrieved young assassin who believes a king on the throne would put the world right, and who has taken a strange new weapon that seems to take hold of whoever carries it. The fifteenth Discworld novel and the second Watch story, it mixes satire with warmth and suits readers who enjoy comic fantasy with a conscience.
