What Wild Magic is about
Daine is thirteen, and she can talk to animals. After her family was murdered, she lost her mind for a time and ran with a pack of wolves, and it was her pony, Cloud, who helped her find her way back to herself. Now she is wary of people, but she takes a job helping Onua, a horse handler for the Queen's Riders, bring ponies to the capital of Tortall.
The journey turns dangerous when creatures called Immortals, long thought to be locked away, attack. Along the way Daine rescues a hawk who proves to be Numair Salmalin, the realm's most powerful mage, and he becomes her teacher. As she settles in Corus, makes friends, and learns to heal animals, she must decide whether she can trust people again. This is the first of four Immortals books, warm and adventurous, and a good fit for young readers who love animals.
