What Sunrise on the Reaping is about

Suzanne Collins's 2025 novel returns to Panem twenty-four years before the first Hunger Games book, and follows Haymitch Abernathy in District 12. He lives with his poor widowed mother and younger brother Sid, secretly distills moonshine for a bootlegger, and loves Lenore Dove Baird, who belongs to the traveling musical group called the Covey. Then comes the 50th Hunger Games, a Quarter Quell in which each district must send four tributes instead of two. Haymitch's fellow District 12 tributes include Wyatt, Louella and Maysilee, and he is assigned mentors Wiress and Mags.

The story shows how the Capitol uses spectacle and propaganda to keep people in line, and how one young man chooses defiance. Haymitch even adopts a charming rascal persona to win sponsors, and Beetee brings him into a secret plan. A prequel to Collins's earlier novels, it will suit readers of the series who want to know how the man they met as a mentor came to be.
