Susan Ryeland is back in England, working as a freelance editor for Causton Books after her attempt at a life in Greece with Andreas did not work out. Her new assignment is the first book in a fresh Atticus Pünd continuation, written by Eliot Crace, grandson of the children's author Miriam Crace. The manuscript, Pünd's Last Case, finds a retired, terminally ill Pünd investigating the death of Margaret Chalfont at a French chateau.
As Susan works, she learns that Miriam was far from the beloved figure her books suggest, and that her family kept quiet about it. Anthony Horowitz's 2025 novel is the third in the Susan Ryeland series, after Moonflower Murders. It plays with publishing, authorship, family secrets and deception, and will please readers who like a mystery nested inside a mystery.
