What Quidditch Through the Ages is about
Rowling presents a book that, in the Harry Potter world, any Hogwarts student could borrow from the library: a history of Quidditch credited to the scholar Kennilworthy Whisp. It is the same title that gets mentioned in several of the novels, and the joke is that it reads like a real reference work from the wizarding world. It traces the sport's past, including where the Golden Snitch came from and why the Wigtown Wanderers wear meat cleavers on their robes.
Rowling wrote it in 2001 as a companion to the series, alongside Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and it was made to raise money for the British charity Comic Relief. All of her royalties go to the charity, and more than 80% of each cover price goes to poor children around the world. By July 2008 the two companion books were estimated to have earned over $30 million. Fans who enjoy the playful, mock-scholarly side of wizarding culture will find plenty to like here.
