What Poppy is about

Poppy is a mouse who lives with her family in an old farmhouse called Gray House, in the Dimwood region. Their lives are ruled by Mr. Ocax, a great horned owl who treats the family as his to command. When he forbids them from moving to New House, where food is easier to find, and a loss strikes Poppy close to home, she decides to see the place for herself.

On her journey she meets Ereth, a prickly porcupine who agrees to protect her in return for a salt lick. Poppy has to find her nerve, and a quill of Ereth's may help her face Ocax. This children's novel, illustrated by Brian Floca, won the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award for fiction in 1996. It is a story about courage, fear, and standing up to those who hold power over you, and it is the first-published tale from Dimwood Forest.
