What Needful Things is about
Castle Rock, Maine, is a town where everyone knows everyone else's business, and when Leland Gaunt opens a new shop there, people line up. The charming elderly newcomer always seems to have exactly the item each customer has been longing for, and at prices that feel almost too good. The one extra condition is that each buyer must play a prank on someone else in town.
Those pranks play on old grudges and private histories, and what begins as mischief turns into rising aggression, chaos and death. Sheriff Alan Pangborn, who first appeared in The Dark Half, is left to make sense of a community coming apart. Stephen King published this 1991 horror novel as the last Castle Rock story, and it was the first he wrote after recovering from addiction. The tone is dark and darkly funny, with a sharp eye on greed and what people will pay to get what they want.
