What Gabriel's Moon is about

Gabriel Dax is a successful travel writer in 1960, but his past has never quite let go. When he was young, a house fire in 1936 killed his mother, and he has lived since then with confused memories and chronic insomnia. On assignment in Léopoldville, he lands an interview with Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba, who says he fears assassination and points a finger at Western intelligence agencies.

Back in London, Gabriel finds he is being watched, and his notes from that interview have caught the interest of both MI6 and the CIA. Faith Green, an enigmatic MI6 handler, then recruits him for a covert job in Spain: retrieving a surrealist artwork. A man who simply writes about places is suddenly caught up in the Cold War.

William Boyd, known for mixing real people and events with invented ones, returns to espionage here for the fourth time. Themes of memory, identity and betrayal run beneath the plot. It suits readers who enjoy period spy fiction with a thoughtful, haunted hero.
