What Double Act is about
Ruby and Garnet are ten-year-old identical twins who share a secret language and see no need for friends at school, because they have each other. Their mother, Opal, has died, and they live with their father and grandmother. Ruby is bold, sociable and sure she will be an actress. Garnet is quieter and happy to let her sister lead. The story is told in diary style, with the twins taking turns to write in an accounts book, so you hear both voices and see how differently they read the same events.
Then things start to shift. Their father finds a new girlfriend, Rose, and a new job, and the family moves to a bookshop in the country, leaving their grandmother behind. Ruby pushes for an audition for a TV adaptation of The Twins at St. Clare's. Clare's, and later sets her heart on a scholarship to Marnock Heights, though only one place is on offer. Warm, funny and honest about jealousy and grief, it asks what happens when two people who have always been a pair start to become themselves. Illustrated by Sue Heap and Nick Sharratt.
