What Crooked Kingdom is about
Days after the events of Six of Crows, the crew is back in a city loosely modeled on 19th-century Europe, and the odds are worse than ever. Kaz plans to kidnap Van Eck's pregnant wife, Alys, and trade her for the captive Inej. Jesper, Nina, Wylan, Inej, Matthias and Kaz are also tangled up with Kuwei, while Pekka Rollins joins forces with Van Eck against them.
Kaz stages an auction for Kuwei's indenture, with Fjerdans, Ravkans, Shu and Zemeni all bidding. Meanwhile Nina finds she can control dead bodies, an ability that may have come from surviving jurda parem withdrawal. The story moves between several third-person viewpoints, so each member of the crew gets room to be wounded, funny and fiercely loyal. This is the second book of the Six of Crows duology, set in the Grishaverse, so readers will want to begin with the first. The tone is dark, quick and gritty, with revenge and found family at its center.
