What The Last Olympian is about
The fifth and final book of the original Percy Jackson series opens with Mount Olympus almost undefended. The gods are busy battling the monster Typhon, while Kronos, the Lord of Time, wearing the body of Luke, marches on New York City. That leaves Percy and the young demigods of Camp Half-Blood to hold Manhattan.
As the battle builds, Percy takes a dangerous plunge in the River Styx, Nico di Angelo, son of Hades, proves a loyal ally, and the camp pays a heavy price in lives. A hidden spy is unmasked, and the prophecy tied to Percy's sixteenth birthday draws closer, leaving him worried that he is fighting against his own fate.
Rick Riordan keeps the humor and pace that made the series popular, while the stakes turn more serious: loyalty, sacrifice and courage run through every chapter. It is best read after the earlier books, and it rewards fans of Greek myth who have followed Percy this far.
