What Dork Diaries is about
Nikki Maxwell is starting eighth grade at a brand new school, and she tells the whole story in her own diary, complete with doodles, drawings and comic strips. Fourteen years old and not quite sure where she fits in, she is also fighting a determined campaign to talk her mom into buying her an iPhone.
Along the way Nikki makes new friends in Chloe and Zoey, nurses a crush on Brandon, and puts up with her zany little sister, Brianna. Then there is MacKenzie, a mean girl who turns into her rival when a school-wide art competition comes along. The tone is light and funny, and the worries about popularity, self-esteem, friendship and family will feel familiar to many young readers. It suits children who like their stories short on lecturing and full of pictures.
