What The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is about

Arnold Spirit Jr., called Junior, is a fourteen-year-old cartoonist growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation near Wellpinit, Washington. He was born with hydrocephalus, and his small frame, seizures, poor eyesight, stutter and lisp make him a regular target for bullies. His family is so poor that his father cannot afford a vet when the family dog is suffering. His one friend, Rowdy, has a fierce reputation but often stands up for him.

Junior makes a bold choice and transfers to Reardan, a school in a much wealthier neighborhood. There he makes new friends, develops a crush, and finds his place on the varsity basketball team, which sets him against the home he left behind. Told in Junior's candid, funny voice and scattered with 65 of his comic drawings, the novel looks at identity, poverty and what it costs to belong to two worlds.
