What Mr. Mercedes is about
Bill Hodges is a retired, divorced detective with too much time and a lonely routine. Then a letter arrives from someone calling himself Mr Mercedes, the driver who plowed a stolen car into a crowd at a job fair, killing eight people and wounding fifteen. Rather than hand it to his old colleague Pete Huntley, Hodges starts investigating on his own.
He is helped by his seventeen-year-old neighbor Jerome Robinson and by Holly, a fragile relative of the car's owner. The killer is Brady Hartsfield, who works in an electronics store, drives an ice cream truck, and lives with his mother. Stephen King calls it his first hard-boiled detective novel, and it is tense, gritty, and driven by obsession. It won the 2015 Edgar Award for Best Novel and opens a trilogy.
