What Divergent is about
In a future Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each defining its members by temperament and values. Beatrice Prior, who later goes by Tris, is born into Abnegation but transfers into Dauntless. There she faces an initiation that includes some brutal scenes, and she keeps a dangerous secret: she is Divergent, meaning her nature does not fit a single faction. If the leaders of Erudite and Dauntless discover this, Divergent people are in danger of being killed.
Tris tells the story herself, in short chapters that keep the pace quick and tense. It is the first of a trilogy with Insurgent and Allegiant, and the related book Four offers Tobias's perspective. It was also made into a movie in 2014. Readers who enjoy dystopian stories about choosing who you are, rather than who you are told to be, will find a lot here.
