What Call Me by Your Name is about
Elio Perlman is seventeen in the summer of 1983, living with his parents at their 17th-century villa in Lombardy, Italy. Every year the family hosts a doctoral student for six weeks, someone to revise a manuscript and help Elio's father with his academic paperwork. This year's guest is Oliver, an American scholar who is easygoing and detached where Elio is watchful and inward.
Elio tells the story as a memory, looking back on the weeks when he recognizes his own desire and finds himself drawn to Oliver. Along the way there is a affair with Marzia, a childhood friend who loves him, and a few days in Rome before Oliver leaves. Written by André Aciman in 2007, it is a lyrical, sensual and wistful novel about first love, identity, and the lives we might have lived, with a father whose understanding gives the story much of its warmth.
