What Burned is about

Pattyn is seventeen, the oldest of seven sisters in a Mormon household where her mother believes a woman's duty is to have many children, ideally a son. Her father drinks and beats his wife. Pattyn questions the strict rules and what is expected of women, and after she is caught drinking in the desert with her boyfriend, her defiance leads her parents to send her to stay with her Aunt Jeanette in eastern Nevada.

There she meets Ethan, a college student, and finds a different way of thinking about faith and her own worth. Letters from home keep reminding her of what she left behind. Written in free verse, the novel is raw, lyrical and intense, and it suits teens and adults who want a frank story about control, family and finding your own voice.
