What All Fours is about
A semi-famous artist, forty-five and in the thick of perimenopause, sets out to drive from Los Angeles to New York, leaving her husband and child at home. Half an hour into the trip she turns off the freeway and checks into an ordinary motel, and the journey she planned never quite happens. What follows is an affair that stirs up a sexual awakening and makes her question the shape of her marriage and her daily life.
Miranda July's second novel is frank, strange and darkly funny, with a dry narrator who keeps the humor close to the surface. It looks at desire in midlife, the pull of domestic routine, and the urge to reinvent yourself. Readers who enjoy candid, offbeat fiction about women's inner lives will find plenty here.
