What The Mark of Athena is about
Annabeth is about to see Percy again after six months apart, thanks to Hera, but she has reasons to be nervous. Camp Jupiter looks to be preparing for war, and she is arriving on the Argo II, Leo's steaming, bronze-dragon-prowed creation, with Jason, Piper, and Leo. The Roman demigods could easily mistake the ship for a Greek weapon, though Jason, as praetor of Camp Jupiter, may be able to calm them.
Annabeth, daughter of the goddess of war and wisdom, also carries a gift from her mother and a command: Follow the Mark of Athena. Avenge me. A prophecy is sending seven demigods to find and close the Doors of Death, and Annabeth worries that Percy may now belong to Roman ways and no longer need his old friends. Themes of loyalty, leadership, and Greek and Roman rivalry run through this adventure.
