Shesheshen is a shapeshifting monster who has been sleeping in an abandoned manor, and she wakes to find three human hunters inside her home. The meeting goes badly for the hunters, and just as badly for her when a rosemary-coated bolt, which is poisonous to her kind, lays her low. Then a woman named Homily rescues her, and an unlikely love begins. The catch is that Homily belongs to the very family Shesheshen has just wronged, and the family believes the monster has cursed them. John Wiswell's debut mixes dark fantasy with a tender romance, and it looks closely at disguise, family cruelty, and what it means to be a mother when your own kind is born in a frightening way.
