What Pretty Little Liars is about

In the Pennsylvania suburb of Rosewood, four girls once belonged to the same clique, ruled by their queen bee, Alison DiLaurentis. Then Alison vanished, and the friends drifted apart. Three years later, Spencer, Hanna, Aria and Emily each begin receiving messages from someone calling themselves "A", who knows secrets they believed only Alison could have known.

Those secrets are small and big, from Spencer's envy of her sister's boyfriend to Aria's crush on her English teacher, Emily's feelings for the new girl and the lengths Hanna goes to in order to stay beautiful. Sara Shepard's first book in the series sets the girls against a stalker who seems always one step ahead, with dread building alongside the glossy, soapy suburban setting. It is a good fit for teenage readers who like their mysteries full of secrets and shifting loyalties.
