What I Fell in Love with Hope is about
The story unfolds largely in a hospital, a hard and unforgiving place, where a young narrator once found his only joy in a mischievous, sun-eyed boy. That boy took his own life in front of him, and the narrator has since sworn never to love anyone again. His friends are the lone exception.
They are a band of rebellious, dying kids. Sony leads them despite having just one lung. Neo, a bad-tempered writer in a wheelchair, records their deeds, from stealing to tormenting their nurse. Coeur is the gentle giant whose heart is failing. Together they plan one last heist, an escape from abusive parents, heavy loss, and the limits their illnesses impose. Then a girl with a mischievous smile and suns in her eyes joins them, and the narrator finds himself falling again, terrified of losing once more. The foreword carries trigger warnings, and readers should take them seriously. It speaks to those drawn to stories about friendship, grief, and love after loss.
