What Band of Brothers is about
Stephen Ambrose follows one parachute infantry company of the 101st Airborne Division through the European war, from the Normandy drop on D-Day to the end of the war. He keeps an eye on the larger battles, but his real subject is the men themselves: who they were, how they leaned on one another, and what the fighting asked of them. The title comes from a line in Shakespeare's Henry V, and the dedication honors the paratroopers who wear the Purple Heart as a badge of office.
The tone is reverent but vivid, closer to good journalism than to a battle-by-battle military manual. It will suit readers who want the human texture of World War II, and anyone who watched the 2001 HBO miniseries and wants the source behind it.
