What We Used to Live Here is about

Eve Palmer and her girlfriend Charlie flip houses, and their latest purchase, in the Pacific Northwest, is a recent buy. Then a family turns up. The father, Thomas Faust, says he grew up in the house and asks for a quick tour for his wife, Paige, and their children, Kai, Newton and Jenny. Eve lives with an anxiety disorder, so she tries to put her unease about the family down to that. When snow closes the road, the Fausts have to stay the night.

As the evening goes on, Eve begins to doubt what she can trust, because objects and rooms seem to change. Between her chapters sit documents about the Old House conspiracy theory, which describes a portal between alternate realities. Marcus Kliewer's 2024 debut began as a story serialized on Reddit before becoming a full novel. It suits readers who enjoy a slow, eerie horror story that keeps asking whether the narrator's mind or the house is at fault.
