What Walk Two Moons is about
Thirteen-year-old Salamanca Hiddle is from Bybanks, Kentucky, but is now renting a house in Euclid, Ohio with her grandparents, after her mother, Sugar, left the family. Now Sal sets out with her grandparents on a long road trip to Lewiston, Idaho, and to pass the miles she tells them about her friend Phoebe Winterbottom, whose own mother vanished one day.
As the two stories run side by side, Sal's account of Phoebe's strange troubles gradually reveals just as much about her own. Along the way come a first romance with Ben Finney and some scrapes on the road. Sharon Creech's Newbery Medal winner is about grief, family, and the habit of judging people before we really know them. It will suit readers who enjoy a warm, thoughtful narrator and a story that rewards patience.
