What The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny is about
Sonia and Sunny are two young Indians whose families have known each other for years, though the pair themselves have never met. When they finally do, it is on a train in India, and the encounter begins a long romance. One of them is studying in Vermont, while the other, a recent Columbia graduate, is preparing to move to the United States. Kiran Desai sets most of the story between 1996 and 2002, and it turns on love, immigration, and the isolation of living between worlds. Readers who like a slow, thoughtful romance with a wide view of the post-colonial world will find much to settle into.
